On day 2 at mistletoe bay it was our activity day. We did sailing, kayaking, bush survival, camp advertisement, orienteering and free time. A lady came and helped us with the sailing and the best people were the people who did not worry but the people who screamed weren't to good the ladies name was Nita. My favourite thing was sailing and Jasmines favourite thing was sailing as well.

Then you play the ball (Roll it under your legs) and the dummy-half will pass it out to the wing or take a run, but remember the dummy can't score a try.

Tiger Turf

This week we have workers putting down tiger turf on the middle court. Right now it is blue  and it has yellow lines going around it. And the court has tape around it so children can not get in and wreck it. Some kids' balls have gone on the tiger turf when the workers are not there so they have to get a teacher to get the balls out. When the tiger turf is all over the court and finished we will be able to: Play on it at lunch, Do jump jam, Play on it safely, Play hockey, Eat on it, Pay less money fixing the concrete when it is cracked, etc.

Science Experiment

This term we have been doing science experiments.

Yesterday in Room 5, we did two experiments. They were making rock out of milk and catapults.
You're probably guessing how to make it?
Step 1:  Get white vinegar, milk, an ice-cream container, a metal bowl with a sieve on the bottom, a bowl and a spoon.
Step 2: Put your metal bowl over the ice cream container.
Step 3: Pour the milk and white vinegar into the bowl, then stir with a spoon.
Step 4: Pour the mixture over the top of the metal bowl.
Step 4: Once the mixture has flown through the sieve you should see some clumpy stuff left on top of the sieve. If you do: Pour it in the ice-cream container and leave it in a dry place for a day or two. If you don't: Repeat until you see it.

The Magnus Effect

In room 5 we have been learning about the Magnus Effect. The Magnus Effect is when you spin a ball from a height backwards and the wind is going each way towards each other around the ball. Since it was thrown backwards, the wind at the back pushes forward and causes the ball to go forwards. It was named after Heinrich Gustav Magnus, who was a German chemist and physicist. Here is a link to a video of a basketball being dropped with the Magnus Effect:

We are all so happy that we won. This is our second year of winning. All of the phone books were delivered in 4 to 5 weeks and we delivered all of them. Battling in persuasive writing

In room five some people are battling each other to see if facebook is better than twitter, horses are better than dogs and lots more. The first thing we do is brain storm our points. The more points we have the more we will probably catch them out.We reason them with facts because that's the way you can pull them up but you have to verify them otherwise they could say that that is not true cause they found a fact that is verified which will give them more power against you.

Creative Spaces

Every class has been making creative space blueprints. This terms topic has been creative spaces. Creative spaces is our one clear concrete space outside the back of the M.P.L.C (Multi Purpose Learning Centre.) Mrs Gulbransen thought that the children could think of what to make, so people in room 5 thought of crazy ideas like laser tag, woodwork, bounce room and WWE rings. We are all very exited for it to be made. But remember there's only $5,000!

Ki-o-rahi Tornament

Some year 5s and 6s went to a Ki-o-rahi tournament at Broadgreen yesterday. They played 6 12 minute games (1 hour and 12 minutes) total. One of our teams won a couple of rounds. From what I've heard it was really fun and tiring. We did cross country yesterday and the people who went were struggling to run! People who went from our class were: Derek, Nick, Jayden and Brynley. Ki-o-rahi is a game where there is a bin in the middle with one circle surrounding it. Then there are 7 cones around the outside as the matariki stars. There is a river that one team cannot go through but the other team can. Two people from one team is in the middle guarding the bin so that the other team does not hit it with the ball, and the rest of the team has to try to get all the matariki cones. The other team has to try and hit the bin with the ball and the people guarding has to try hit it back or catch it.

Persuasive Posters

In room 5 we have been doing  persuasive posters on our creative spaces. Persuasion is when some one wants to make you buy or do something and we made our own poster for creative spaces. Mrs Gulbransen is going to choose a winner for the creative space and then that design will be made. Some of the designs  people made are Skate parks, Woodwork room and UFC cages. Some people thought there could just be nothing there, just an extension to the handball courts. Some people want playgrounds but there's to many playground on our school. Some people want playground but i said I don't want playground to maths play that's why they call it school. school is for learning not for play they didn't call school play when you grow up you don't no anything if someone asks you about the  space. You Just gonna stand say nothing don't do lots of play do lots of work  so that you can learn.

Minute mile

Room  5 have been working on a thing called the minute mile.We have 36  questions and answers to read in under a minute and if 7 more people do that in a minute we get to have our digital device day before morning tea on the 25th of june it happens on the day we have planed for it to be on. you think it is easy and some people find it easy but some people find it extremely hard. But all you have to do is read fast in under a minute i jasmine have not done it yet. This year 5 kids have done the minute mile .Including Guyan the first year 4 to do it he did it in 54 seconds on the 12.6.15 he will get a free juicy and he will also twink the answers out. and say them in under a minute. some other people how have done it are Jay did it in 52 seconds with the answers and 53 second with out the answers, Neil did 56 seconds with the answers James did it in 1minute (answer) and Bryney how did it in 58 (answers)
You have to read them down (well it is faster to do down) There are so many people in this class that are close to doing it.

Digital Device Day

Last Thursday we did a maths test on our times tables from 1 to 12 and our gaol was to average 93 with getting them correct.Instead we got an outstanding average of 108 which is 15 more than we aimed for.
Mr Davis said we nailed it right in the head and that we did better than the two classes he's had before!
We had 7 weeks to practise in math time and we used our math multiplication flash cards from last year for our practising, we had about an hour and a half each time.
Some of us even went home and practised their times tables and that helped every one improve.
The people who stood out the most are... Brynley, Jaya, Ethan, Ellie, Te Matai and Nick.
So on Thursday week 10 we will have a digital device day and might have a shared lunch
We all are proud of each others work.
We also hope to keep up the good work.

Minute Mile!

In room 5 for math we are practising the minute mile. So far 5 people can do it, when you can do it you have to twink your answers out .What you have to do is say it like this:  9x6=54 and then say it backwards, 6x9=54. If you have to get your answers twinked out you need to figure it out like 4x2=? If most of our class can do the minute mile we might get to have a digital device day.

Cricket world cup

Black caps Versus Sri lanka
On the first day of the world cup  they were at Saxton oval in Nelson.
The seats were all full.
Some children led the cricketers into the field.
The drone flew around at the start of the game and got videos of the field and the cricket players practicing.
Sri lanka was batting first.
The whistle blew and the game started!
There was a gigantic playground with bouncy castles and it was fun.
One batter for Sri lanka was already out For leg before wicket (When the ball hits the batters leg).
There  were people cheering for the Black caps and waving flags. "yeah woo hoo"
But next Sri lanka got a 4.
Suddenly the batter ran and he got 3 runs or sri lanka.
At the end the score for Sri Lanka was 167.
Now it was turn for the Black Caps to bat!
and then at the end  of the game Sri lanka ended with a score of 167.
Near the end of the game it was up to Brendan Mcullum to win this.
Everyone was
New Zealand had a very close win with...

Welcome back to Room 5!!

This year Room 5 has a lot of fun stuff ahead of us like: Class camp in 2 weeks, New people (year 4 and 5's) and much much more! We have new challenges as well. We have a class code that says: Manakitanga, TrailBlazers, Respect, 100% Effort, Bully-Free and Work Together. A Whakatauki Mckenzie said for her oral language is: Kaua e mata Wheke uru roa. Don't Die like an octopus, die like a Hammer head shark. Mr. Davis thought of a quote for our class.

NONE OF US IS AS SMART AS ALL OF US.
